German offshore grid operator TenneT has awarded contracts to a partnership of Hitachi Energy and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for the delivery of two new high-voltage direct current connections, designated Nederwiek3 and LanWin5, continuing a pattern of North Sea grid expansion by one of Europe's most active transmission developers.

A Recurring Partnership for North Sea Expansion

The contract awards mark at least two additional North Sea HVDC projects secured by the Hitachi Energy and L&T pairing under TenneT's offshore grid development program. The two links, Nederwiek3 and LanWin5, form part of TenneT's broader effort to connect offshore wind generation in the North Sea to onshore power networks, a program that has grown substantially in scope as Germany and the Netherlands push to expand renewable energy capacity.

HVDC technology is the standard choice for long-distance offshore transmission, allowing large volumes of electricity to be carried from wind farms located far from shore with lower losses than conventional alternating current systems.
